Who we are
Our core values at St John the Baptist are centred on the words of Jesus and strengthened by his Holy Spirit in service as part of the Ringstone in Aveland group of churches. We support the mission and vision of the new wider benefice group and share the Good News of Jesus Christ through being an accessible, inclusive, caring and welcoming community of faith and worship.
Our key priorities
Our whole approach is to develop a well-loved, flourishing, confident and well used church embedded in the village of Morton, with flexible and attractive buildings, adequately resourced in skills and lay involvement.
Our key priority is to ensure that all aspects of church life are welcoming, inclusive, accessible, relevant and safe by:
-
Growing the size of the church community
-
Finding new ways of making the church buildings available for and more useful to the wider community
-
Developing new worship styles, both traditional and contemporary
-
Furthering the excellent relationship with our church school
-
Supporting our current ALMs and increasing lay involvement
The church and church team
St John the Baptist Church is an impressive Grade 1 listed medieval building. We have an ambitious plan to develop the church buildings to make it a more usable space for the village and wider communities and are now seeking to implement these plans. The church hall is opposite the church and is part if this development plan.
As a type 2 church, weekly Sunday services are held: two sacristans support the services Eucharist services and are enhanced by a well-established choir and organist, which also support occasional offices.
The church bells are rung regularly, both for a variety of services and national events.
We have a range of volunteers who currently provide tea and coffee after most morning services, providing an opportunity to socialise, and who tend the churchyard.
Various fundraising activities take place throughout thje year, and are well supported by the whole village.
St John the Baptist and the wider village community
St John the Baptist seeks to meet the current needs of the village community though:
-
Providing a book exchange
-
Weekly coffee mornings
-
A Bourne Food Bank collection point
-
A venue for local groups including the Guides and the Parish Council
-
A carol service on Christmas Eve, where attendance is increasing, and in 2024 stood at nearly 350
Morton Church of England Primary School
Morton C of E Primary School is the only church school in the combined Group and the link with the church is strong. The governing body include the incumbent and lay church members, and the community is keen to support and nurture the children’s faith, through visits and church services. This close link was recognised and applauded in the recent SIAMs inspection
